Prime Minister Chrétien announced in House of Commons 17 March 2003 that Canada would not participate in US-led invasion of Iraq absent UN Security Council authorisation. First major postwar break with US-UK alignment on war of choice. Canada had participated in Afghanistan (ISAF) since 2001.
