Abiy Ahmed's June 5 2018 announcement accepting the Algiers Agreement and the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission ruling in full ended a 20-year no-peace-no-war stalemate after the 1998-2000 border war. Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship signed in Asmara Jul 9 2018; embassies reopened, flights resumed, phone lines restored. Earned Abiy the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Cooperation later deepened through Eritrean involvement in the 2020-2022 Tigray war.
