What the policy did

Sequential closure of Belgian coal mines under Martens-era industrial restructuring. Winterslag 1988, Beringen 1989, Eisden 1987, Waterschei 1987, Zwartberg had closed earlier. Last mine Zolder closed 30 September 1992. Ended centuries-old Belgian coal industry. Substantial regional-restructuring costs in Limburg absorbed via Kempisch Fonds and Flemish regional policy.
